  • Dragon's Tongue at Mud Volcano in Yellowstone. This area of Yellowstone was so incredibly ugly and stinky, it was beautiful. This particular vent was coughing up fumes, waves of muddy water coming out with each belch.<br /> <br /> Daily photo: 9/15/2011

  • A few days before this photo was taken, we were on a safari in Lamar Valley, spotting prey for wolves, but not any wolves. We were told that if there are wolves anywhere about, all the animals would be looking in one direction, and that that was the best way to locate the wolves. The next day, we were driving through Hayden Valley, and every place there was a pullout, the parking lot was chock filled with people with their telescopes, binoculars, and humongous cameras. Our daughter remarked, "Whenever the animals are all looking in one direction, there must be wolves around." We laughed and pulled over. Sure enough, that is exactly what they were all looking at: a pack of wolves tearing apart a carcass. <br /> <br /> I took this photo with a 200 mm lens, and you can see that the wolves are barely visible in the center.
